Recommended viewing: El Mariachi/Desperado by Robert Rodriguez. If you buy or rent the DVD, there is a short chapter on there called "Ten Minute Film School". This guy is one of the best low-budget feature directors in Hollywood, he writes/shoots and edits his own movies, and it all started with his action/adventure movie "El Mariachi" which he shot for $7,000. Also recommended reading is his book "Rebel Without a Crew". See user comments in link "Ten Minute Film School" above.
Here is a link to the original text of the film on the DVD. It's not quite the same, but close enough if you don't have the money for the DVD. I am trying to do what Robert Rodriguez has done, to get around the high-priced Hollywood system and still get a product that is entertaining and gets my viewpoint across effectively.
